When you first suspect that engine trouble is brewing, it’s important to promptly get to the shop for an inspection. If you delay, the issue could soon escalate and become far more expensive to take care of. At Autobahn Specialists, we specialize in European engine repair in Pierce County, WA.

Warning Signs of an Engine Problem

An illuminated check engine light is one cause for concern. If your check engine light flashes on, it doesn’t necessarily mean that your engine is on the cusp of catastrophe. But you should still get to the shop ASAP for diagnostics so that any developing issues are identified as early as possible. Then the issues can be addressed before they get worse. Common check engine light triggers include issues with catalytic converters, spark plugs, and oxygen sensors.

Strange sounds that come from your engine should be investigated. If you hear knocking/tapping noises, then you could be dealing with problems such as dangerously low oil, a bad rod bearing, or a lean air/fuel mixture. If there are squealing noises, then there’s reason to suspect a serpentine belt issue. Grinding noises could mean you have a broken water pump.

Discolored/excessive exhaust smoke is another reason to be concerned. Blue-tinted smoke suggests an oil leak. Black smoke is a sign of excessive fuel burning. White smoke is an indication of an internal coolant leak and may mean you have a blown head gasket.

You’ll also want to get to the shop if your car has lost a lot of power. If you drive an old car with high mileage and it has gradually lost a little power, then you don’t necessarily need to worry. But a sudden loss of a lot of power could mean there’s a serious issue such as piston or head gasket trouble.
